Description

Educators across Virginia are asking themselves how they can better work toward creating more inclusive schools where every student and educator knows that they can truly belong, achieve, and contribute to their school community. This question is being asked with more urgency and frequency in response to recent incidents of bias and prejudice at schools and in communities. In fact, the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities has had to respond to a 1,300% increase in requests for support after incidents of bias, bullying, or discrimination within the past two years.

To support school administrators, educators, staff, and students, VCIC invites public and private school educators from Chesterfield, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, New Kent, and Richmond to register for a Teachable Moments Educator Workshop. This 6-hour professional development session will cover a range of topics, including learning about how bias and prejudice affect schools, developing a shared language for exploring barriers to inclusion, gaining perspectives on how to prevent and respond to hurtful comments, and considering ways to effectively and educationally navigate controversial topics by turning them in to teachable moments.

This session is made possible by the Herbert J. and Ruth B. Rubel Holocaust Education Fund and the Alexander Lebenstein Fund for Tolerance and Human Rights of the Richmond Jewish Foundation. Lunch and all program materials are provided at no cost to participating educators.

Please call or email Jessica Hawthorne, VCIC's Director of Programs with any questions (jhawthorne@inclusiveVA.org).

Space is limited and only available to educators in Chesterfield, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, New Kent, and Richmond. All registrations are subject to review of geographic location prior to confirmation of attendance.
